Why Take a Shikara Ride in Kumarakom?

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary from the water

The 14-acre sanctuary on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake is best seen from a boat. A shikara can glide along its mangrove-lined canals at dawn, when herons, egrets and kingfishers are feeding.

Quieter canals than Alleppey

Kumarakom sees far less boat traffic than Alleppey. If you want the backwaters almost to yourself, this is the place.

Village life and coir making

The villages around Kumarakom and Aymanam — the setting of Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things — still make coir rope by hand and farm paddy polders reclaimed from the lake.

Kumarakom Boat Ride FAQs

How much is a boat ride in Kumarakom?

Private 3-hour shikara rides in Kumarakom start from ₹2,800 per boat for up to 6 guests. Shorter 1–2 hour rides and speedboat trips on Vembanad Lake are also available on request.

Alleppey or Kumarakom — which is better for a boat ride?

Alleppey has the larger network of narrow village canals and more variety; Kumarakom is quieter, closer to the bird sanctuary and ideal if you are staying at a Kumarakom resort. We run rides in both.

Can I see birds on a Kumarakom boat ride?

Yes. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary borders Vembanad Lake, and early morning rides along its edge regularly see egrets, herons, darters, cormorants and kingfishers. Migratory birds visit from November to February.
