Lunch & Day Shikara Cruise
Village canals, Vembanad Lake and a Kerala meal you will remember.
From ₹2,800 / boat
Morning mist, still water and the backwaters waking up around you.

The first light over Alleppey is the quietest, most photogenic moment on the backwaters. Mist hangs low over the paddy fields, the water is glass-still and the only sounds are birdsong and the soft hum of our shikara. This three-hour sunrise cruise is built for early risers, photographers and anyone who wants to see village life in Kuttanad before the day-trippers arrive.
Unlike a houseboat, a shikara is small and low enough to slip into the narrow, hidden canals that larger boats simply cannot enter. That means close-up views of canal-side homes, fishermen casting nets, children rowing to school and kingfishers diving just a few metres from your seat. If you only have one morning in Alleppey, this is the ride to take. Compare every option on our Alleppey shikara ride page.
Shikara advantage: shikaras are small enough to enter the narrow, hidden canals of Kuttanad where large houseboats cannot reach — so you see village life, paddy fields below sea level and birdlife up close.

Times are approximate and can shift with weather, tides and water traffic.
Meet your boatman at the Punnamada / Finishing Point jetty. Hot tea is ready on board.
Cruise onto open water to watch the sun lift through the morning haze — the best light of the day for photos.
Turn off the main channel into palm-fringed village canals where houseboats cannot follow.
Pass the famous Kuttanad paddy fields, farmed up to two metres below sea level behind mud and stone bunds.
Slow down along quiet backwaters to spot egrets, cormorants, kingfishers and brahminy kites.
Back in time for breakfast — or ask us to add a breakfast stop at a local tea shop.
Low sun, mist over the water and mirror-like reflections make sunrise the favourite slot for photographers. Our boatmen know where to pause for the best angles.
Birds are most active in the first hours of the day. Expect egrets, pond herons, little cormorants, darters and several species of kingfisher along the canal banks.
Watch Kuttanad wake up — women washing at the ghats, fishermen in round coracles, ferries carrying workers and toddy tappers climbing coconut palms.
Mornings are the coolest time on the water, and the canals are at their calmest. Cushioned seating and a covered canopy keep you comfortable throughout.

Boarding is at 6:00 AM and the cruise returns around 9:00 AM. In winter (Nov–Feb) we can start at 6:15 AM to match the later sunrise.
Yes — early morning is the best time for birdwatching in Alleppey. Birds feed actively at first light and the quiet canals let you get close without disturbing them.
From ₹2,500 for a private boat for up to 6 guests for 3 hours. Larger boats for groups are available — message us on WhatsApp for a quote.
During June–September cloud cover can hide the sunrise itself, but the misty canals and lush green paddy fields make the monsoon one of the most beautiful times to ride.
