Houseboats are wonderful for an overnight stay, but they are large and stick to the wide main channels of Vembanad Lake. A shikara is narrow and shallow, so it can turn into the small village canals of Kuttanad — the heart of the backwaters.
Canals only a few metres wide, shaded by coconut palms, with homes, temples and tiny shops right at the water’s edge.
Kuttanad is one of the few places in the world where rice is farmed below sea level. From a shikara you cruise right alongside the bunds that hold back the water.
Kingfishers, egrets, cormorants, darters and kites — the quiet engine and slow pace let you get close without disturbing them.

Every boat is canopied, cushioned and run by a licensed local boatman. Life jackets are on board for all guests.

A private 3-hour shikara ride in Alleppey starts from ₹2,500 per boat for up to 6 guests. Lunch and sunset cruises start from ₹2,800, and 4-hour combo tours from ₹4,500. Prices vary by season and group size.
Early morning (6–9 AM) is best for photography and birdwatching; late afternoon (4–7 PM) for sunset views and cooler air. October to March has the most pleasant weather, while the monsoon (June–September) makes the canals lush and green.
A shikara is better for exploring narrow village canals in a few hours and is far cheaper. A houseboat suits an overnight stay on the wider lake channels. Many travellers do both. Read our full houseboat vs shikara comparison.
Most of our rides start from the Punnamada / Finishing Point jetty in Alleppey town. Kumarakom rides start from the Kavanattinkara jetty. We share the exact boarding point and a map pin on WhatsApp after booking.
